Casting: Virginia / Washington DC

Auditions for “From the Ash Baxter Files: The Search For the Stolen Spyglass” in Virginia / DC Area!

Auditions for Drive Thru Drama

The Alden presents “Drive-Thru Drama,” a new model of theater (as far as we know!) in a COVID-19 world. “Drive-Thru Drama” is a social-distance theater format that brings people together for live theater from the comfort of their own cars. Actors will perform one, cohesive story through short scenes placed across the MCC parking lot. Audience members will simply roll down their windows and drive the route from actor to actor.

“From the Ash Baxter Files: The Search for the Stolen Spyglass” written by Andrew Scott Zimmer, commissioned by The Alden.
• Description: Somebody has snatched Mr. Dimwizzle’s priceless spyglass! And now Ash Baxter, the super sleuth of Dakota Riddle High School, needs your help to whittle down the suspect list in the (optionally) interactive world premiere play.

The performances are Friday- Sunday, Sept. 11-13, 18-20 and 25-27 from 4-7 p.m.

A limited number of timed tickets will be available through The Alden’s webpage. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Actors ages 14+ are eligible to audition.

Actors must email the link to their audition video and submit the casting form by midnight, Tuesday, Aug. 18. Call Backs will be on Thursday, Aug. 20, over Zoom. All actors invited to Call Backs will receive advance notice of the time that they will be called.

• “From the Ash Baxter Files: The Search For the Stolen Spyglass” is an interactive piece of theater.
• All performers should be comfortable with improvisation.

The Students of Dakota Riddle High School, all of whom can be played by a performer of any gender or ethnicity:

Robin “Shifty” Magee (Any gender/ethnicity) – Ash’s mysterious best friend, a whiz with recon and surveillance, though largely preferring to remain in the shadows.

Casey Pinerider (Any gender/ethnicity) – A self-described star athlete, apparently fresh from a heroic triumph on the diamond.

Pip Bishop (Any gender/ethnicity) – A seemingly mild-mannered member of the Chess Club who may be hiding a fierce competitive edge!

Parker “Louie” Barker – (Any gender/ethnicity) – The no-nonsense First Lieutenant (“Louie”) of the JROTC corps at Riddle High, lover of order and procedure.

The Faculty of Dakota Riddle High School—

Bailey “Sudsy” Bucket  (Male adult, any ethnicity) – Jovial janitor who takes great pride in his work. Where Sudsy lacks knowledge, he makes it up with heart.

Miss Sweetlesson (Female adult, any ethnicity) – An English teacher, very proper, who no one could ever reasonably expect to be a thief!

Mr. Dimwizzle (Male adult, any ethnicity)*** – Ash’s beloved, if hapless, history teacher, who also runs the Gumshoe Club, which Ash aspires to lead one day. ***Due to the staging requirements of the show, three performers will be cast as Mr. Dimwizzle.

TV Pilot “American Lodestar” Casting Call for Politically Driven Individuals in Richmond, Virginia!

Casting Director for a new TV pilot called “American Lodestar” is searching for talented, politically driven individuals in Richmond, VA that represent the diverse community of the city and the country.

The intention is to reduce the polarization that is happening across our country and connect people (pairing individuals as teams of two) who differ in their political views or personal lifestyle but who are willing to work together to solve some of Richmond’s most challenging economic issues from education to housing to employment. If two people want to apply as a team, most likely they’d live in different households. (More to come if interested.)

The first challenge is our education dilemma due to the pandemic and the economic divide among social classes. By hosting these conversations and presenting an opportunity to engage people, we get to inspire the public by releasing these videos and give voice to those who are passionate and eager to make a difference.

The final cast selections will be announced August 7, 2020.

Deadline to submit is August 4, 2020!

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
For this fast-paced, Shakespeare tour, we are seeking about five actors who enjoy both the language of Shakespeare and the playfulness of ensemble, slapstick comedy.  This is high energy, big characters, and a ridiculous good time, about 30 – 40 minutes in length. Our goal is to allow middle and high school students the opportunity to experience, understand, and delight in an accessible and interactive bit of Shakespeare.  All roles open to all genders and ethnicities.

ACTOR 1:   (Prepare ANGELO in SIDE 2 & the line of SHAKESPEARE in SIDE 1) Shakespeare/Angelo/Pinch (Duke possible)
Actor 1 is our playwright and host Shakespeare, who guides us through his tangled mess of plot lines by introducing every scene in rhyme.  Additionally, Actor 1 has the fun of playing a slick goldsmith named Angelo, and a televangelist exorcist called Pinch.

ACTOR 2:    (Prepare ADRIANA in SIDE 1 & COURTESAN in SIDE 2)  Adriana/Duke/Courtesan
Actor 2 plays the sometimes Shrewish, sometimes saucy, strong wife of Antipholus of Ephesus.  In contrast to this character, is Kim Kardashian-Courtesan, an Instagram vixen who is literally a cardboard cutout with lips.  Actor 2 may also have the grand role of the Duke.

ACTOR 3: (Prepare LUCIANA in SIDE 1 & OFFICER/MERCHANT in SIDE 2)  Luciana/Officer/Merchant/Egeon/Aemelia (nun puppet)
Actor 3’s multiple characters include Antipholus’ wife’s sister, the lovely Luciana, the Donna Reed of Shakespeare.  Also, Egeon an old man with an adventurous monologue. This performer gets to play with some puppeteering as Aemilia, the nun.  And one (two?) of the wildest roles, the Officer/Merchant, is designed to be played with a costume that allows for instantaneous change between the characters of police officer and tough guy merchant.

ACTOR 4: (Prepare ANTIPHOLUS in SIDE 2 and SIDE 3)
Antipholus of Syracuse and Antipholus of Ephesus
Actor 4 plays the high-status twins. These are the characters at the center of our comedic confusions, persecuted by police, angry wives, and exorcists.  They are long-suffering, short-tempered masters to the Dromios.

ACTOR 5: (Prepare DROMIO in the SIDE 1 and SIDE 3)
Dromio of Syracuse and Dromio of Ephesus
Actor 5 plays the low-status, servant twins. These are the none-too-bright, knocked-around servants of Antipholus.  Our Dromios are loony wise-crackers, who regularly get bonked, boffed, or booted like a football in exchange for their service.
